SkinPen® Microneedling
Aftercare & Recovery Guide
SkinPen Microneedling Aftercare and Recovery Guide
I'm Lindsey Rapp, MS, RD, LE. SkinPen stimulates your skin's repair response. How you care for it afterward is as important as the appointment itself. This guide expands my Waterford studio's aftercare protocol so Metro Detroit clients know what to expect day by day.
SkinPen is an FDA-cleared microneedling device. Clearances include use for facial acne scars in adults 22 years and older, and for certain neck wrinkles in specified Fitzpatrick skin types — candidacy is confirmed in consultation. This page is aftercare education, not a promise of a specific medical outcome.
Right After Your Appointment (Day 0)
- Skin may look red, feel warm, or feel tight — similar to a moderate sunburn for many clients.
- Follow the products and instructions I give you before you leave. Do not freestyle with acids or scrubs.
- Keep hands clean; avoid touching your face unnecessarily.
- Protect from sun; skip intentional UV exposure.
- Sleep on a clean pillowcase.
If you have severe pain, spreading redness, pus, or symptoms that worry you, contact the studio and seek medical care as appropriate.
Day-by-Day Snapshot
Days 1–2
Redness and sensitivity are common. Use only approved gentle cleansers and healing support products. No retinoids, AHAs/BHAs, scrubs, or scrubbing tools unless I specifically cleared them.
Days 3–4
Flaking or dryness can appear as skin turns over. Resist picking. Keep hydration simple and occlusive enough for comfort without heavy fragrance.
Days 5–7
Most clients feel closer to normal socially. Continue sunscreen. Reintroduce actives only when I say your barrier is ready — not because a calendar app reminded you.
Week 2 and beyond
Collagen remodeling continues under the surface even when makeup looks normal again. Consistency with sunscreen and a calm routine protects your investment.
What to Avoid (Until Cleared)
- Picking, peeling, or "helping" flakes off
- Hot yoga, steam rooms, and high-heat workouts while acutely inflamed
- Swimming pools / hot tubs while the barrier is compromised
- Unapproved serums, oils, and multi-acid routines
- Direct sun and tanning beds
What to Use
Stick to the plan from your visit. If you need retail support, shop options that match the protocol — see shop.lindseyrappskin.com only for products that fit what I recommended, not as a substitute for the aftercare sheet.
When to Book Your Next SkinPen Session
Texture and scar goals usually need a series, not a one-off. Series timing depends on how you heal and what we're treating.
Single session / series pricing on Square: $320 per treatment · $900 for a series of 3 (recommended) · 1 hour 30 minutes (includes numbing cream)

FAQ: Microneedling Aftercare
How long is SkinPen downtime?
Many clients look socially pink for 24–72 hours; dryness/flaking can follow. Your timeline may differ.
Can I wear makeup after microneedling?
Ask before you leave — timing depends on how your skin responded that day.
When can I work out again?
Wait until heat and sweat won't aggravate freshly treated skin; I'll give you a personalized window.
Is aftercare different for acne scars vs wrinkles?
Core rules (gentle care, sun protection, no picking) stay the same; series length and settings differ by goal.
Makeup, Work, and Social Plans
If you have photos, a wedding party, or a big presentation, tell me when we schedule. We can time SkinPen so peak redness does not land on your event. Many clients prefer Friday appointments so weekend recovery is private — that is preference, not a rule.
Mineral makeup timing is individualized. When in doubt, skip makeup another day rather than layering over a compromised barrier.
Series Thinking Without Pressure
Acne scarring and etched lines rarely resolve in a single pass. I would rather you understand a three-session conversation up front than feel surprised later. Series pricing appears on Square as $900 for a series of 3 (recommended); each visit runs about 1 hour 30 minutes with numbing cream.
Between sessions, sunscreen and gentle care protect the work we already did.
When Aftercare Means "Call Me"
Contact the studio (and seek urgent care when appropriate) for signs of infection, allergic response, or anything that feels sharply wrong — not only mild pinkness. You know your body; use that judgment.
Shop aftercare articles may promote products; this page stays clinical protocol + next appointment intent so we do not cannibalize retail content.
Traveling Home Across Metro Detroit After Treatment
If you are driving back to Detroit, Royal Oak, or the western suburbs, bring a clean water bottle, avoid blasting hot air on your face, and skip running errands that put you in bright midday sun without a hat and SPF once cleared to apply it. Plan grocery runs before your appointment when you can.
Home Routine vs Shop Content
Retail blogs may recommend cleansers and SPF for healing skin. Use them only when they match the written protocol from your visit. This aftercare page owns clinical timing and "when to book the series"; product SKUs belong on shop URLs.
